If you are planning to host a dinner party and sushi is on the menu, you don’t need to source a sushi chef that can deliver, as home-made sushi is within the reach of most people. There is no limit to what you can put into a sushi, and aside from specially prepared rice, vegetables, meat, fish, and even tropical fruits can be added to this ancient Japanese dish. If you have decided to serve this unique dish, here is a guide to creating a sushi that everyone will enjoy.
Traditionally, sushi uses short grained rice and the rice is best prepared about 4 hours prior to serving. Here is a list of things you’ll need for a serving for 6 people:
- 5 cups of short grained rice
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 cup of rice vinegar
Take a suitable bowl and mix the rice vinegar, salt, and sugar until the mixture has dissolved completely. Then rinse the rice under cold, running water until it is clear, then, after draining the rice thoroughly, put it into a frying pan and add 5 cups of water. Bring this to the boil over high heat, then allot it to simmer and cook covered for 10-15 minutes, which should absorb all the water. Next, you will need a shallow baking tray and spread the rice evenly while adding the rice vinegar. It is important to fan the rice and turn it frequently for about 15 minutes, until it is at room temperature, and your sushi rice is ready to roll.
Part of the fun with sushi is creating your own, so you will need a small area for the rolling station, which can either be the dinner table or a worktop in the kitchen, whichever is more convenient. You will need to have prepared all the fillings in advance and they should be present when your guests arrive. Mix ¼ cup of rice vinegar with 4 cups of water and pour this into small bowls to moisten their hands while rolling the sushi. The last thing you will need are the bamboo rolling mats, which can be purchased at any supermarket.
An essential part of any cuisine, sushi condiments include soy sauce and of course, wasabi, which simply must be in attendance. There’s no strict regime about other things so you might as well add some black pepper or anything you think might add to the flavour.

- 8 ounces of cooked and peeled shrimp (with tails removed)
- 2 English cucumbers
- 1/3 cup of rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1/3 cup of roasted and chopped peanuts
Cut the shrimp in half lengthways and thinly slice the cucumbers, then mix all the ingredients in a suitable bowl and sprinkle the peanuts after complete. Leave the salad in the fridge for at least 3 hours prior to serving.
