How to Make Guest Worthy Sushi at Home

If you are planning to host a dinner party and sushi is on the menu, you don’t need to source a sushi chef that can deliver, as home-made sushi is within the reach of most people. There is no limit to what you can put into a sushi, and aside from specially prepared rice, vegetables, meat, fish, and even tropical fruits can be added to this ancient Japanese dish. If you have decided to serve this unique dish, here is a guide to creating a sushi that everyone will enjoy.

How to Make Guest Worthy Sushi at Home

Sushi Rice

Traditionally, sushi uses short grained rice and the rice is best prepared about 4 hours prior to serving. Here is a list of things you’ll need for a serving for 6 people:

  • 5 cups of short grained rice
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 cup of rice vinegar

Take a suitable bowl and mix the rice vinegar, salt, and sugar until the mixture has dissolved completely. Then rinse the rice under cold, running water until it is clear, then, after draining the rice thoroughly, put it into a frying pan and add 5 cups of water. Bring this to the boil over high heat, then allot it to simmer and cook covered for 10-15 minutes, which should absorb all the water. Next, you will need a shallow baking tray and spread the rice evenly while adding the rice vinegar. It is important to fan the rice and turn it frequently for about 15 minutes, until it is at room temperature, and your sushi rice is ready to roll.

Rolling Station

Part of the fun with sushi is creating your own, so you will need a small area for the rolling station, which can either be the dinner table or a worktop in the kitchen, whichever is more convenient. You will need to have prepared all the fillings in advance and they should be present when your guests arrive. Mix ¼ cup of rice vinegar with 4 cups of water and pour this into small bowls to moisten their hands while rolling the sushi. The last thing you will need are the bamboo rolling mats, which can be purchased at any supermarket.

The Condiments

An essential part of any cuisine, sushi condiments include soy sauce and of course, wasabi, which simply must be in attendance. There’s no strict regime about other things so you might as well add some black pepper or anything you think might add to the flavour.

The Salad

Here is a great recipe for a shrimp salad that will complement the sushi perfectly, and for this, you will need the following:

  • 8 ounces of cooked and peeled shrimp (with tails removed)
  • 2 English cucumbers
  • 1/3 cup of rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup of roasted and chopped peanuts

Cut the shrimp in half lengthways and thinly slice the cucumbers, then mix all the ingredients in a suitable bowl and sprinkle the peanuts after complete. Leave the salad in the fridge for at least 3 hours prior to serving.

There are many novel ways to prepare fillings for sushi, with crab and salmon a very popular choice, and for veg, you can use asparagus or carrot to good effect. Mushrooms, sprouts and spinach are all ideal fillings, and with a little practice, you will soon get the hang of rolling sushi, and hopefully, the dinner party will be a success.

What’s cooking? How do people celebrate payday in Australia?

What's cooking? How do people celebrate payday in Australia?

But what day is that? Payday of course! After what feels like twice the amount of time, it’s there at last, and what better way to celebrate than to treat yourself a bit. So, let’s have a look what happens usually at that end of the month period time.

You will be waking up in a state of happiness

Hallelujah! The day which you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived, and you just cannot wait for the time of the day when you know that all that cold hard cash drops into your bank account. Mostly so it can help to replenish that void left by your overdraft!

You’re full of apprehension

You shake off the sleep by anticipating all of the fun stuff you can start doing shortly because you will have some money. Fun stuff such as booking that exotic food class you’ve had your eye on for some time, and hitting a couple of your favourite restaurants and pubs.

You acknowledge your talents

You will take a moment to reflect on just how proud you are of your work, because you actually have a skill set that people are willing to hire and pay you for. Little does your employer know that you kind of spend a large proportion of your wages after two weeks of receiving it!

Uh oh! Suspicion, suspicion!

Time has passed and it’s getting a little late in the day and your money still hasn’t arrived. Maybe you’ve been sacked? Maybe your employer has messed up your bank details? What if your employer has gone into bankruptcy? Heaven forbid! That weekend out with friends looks like it just might not happen!

Ker Ching! Pure joy!

At long, long last! You check your bank account and yes you’ve been paid! That huge (well, sort of!) number right there makes you forget about how you’d rather be lying in bed a lot longer every morning, and that dreadful commute you have to endure twice a day. You are pretty certain that this emotion is exactly what a mother feels like when she holds her first born child. Or a baby koala.

A sweet moment of relief

You quieten down a little bit and finally relax for the first time in about two weeks. You’re back into the positive figure territory, and it does feel pretty good. This has to be what it must feel like to be rich, and this is probably what people like Angelina Jolie must feel like for every single moment of their lives.

You’re bullet proof

It now dawns on you that you have some money so that you can pretty much do anything! You can just pop into your favourite Thai restaurant for dinner and order anything on the menu. Or even better, you could even take a career break and fly off to Thailand tomorrow and eat real authentic delicious Thai food! The opportunities are endless.

Harsh disappointment

Reality is definitely a leveller! You take a closer look at how much you’ve actually been paid, and it dawns on you that you don’t really get paid that much at all when compared to how hard you toil away. You work out your tax deductions and then automatically start planning a new life in tax-free Bermuda!

Of course, all of the above is in jest! (Even though it may be close to the bone for some good people!) But you get the drift. Whatever you do on your pay day, make sure to do it in style! Enjoy!

Things to do with your old unwanted clothes

Everybody has some of these, you know, the ones sitting at the back of the wardrobe or in the bottom drawer.  So, what can we do with these items of clothing which are just lying around looking sad and wanting someone to wear them?! Let’s take a little look at a few things that can be done.

Things to do with your old unwanted clothes

  1. Why not have a swap night with some of your friends, where you can all bring items that you don’t wear anymore, and then swap some of the items around. This makes a great excuse for a night in, and you never know what you may end up with! Just like the old saying goes, your trash may be someone else’s treasure. Just ensure that what you bring home will be clothing that you will actually wear and looks good on you and isn’t just more clutter in your wardrobe.
  1. Donating old clothes to charity is a grand idea for a number of reasons. It’s a great way to free up some space in your wardrobes and drawers (and who doesn’t want that?!). The environment will also benefit because clothing thrown away rather than donated will end up on the landfill. Plus, donating old clothes can be especially helpful to society as people who need affordable clothing often have access to donated clothes. So, take out the ones you just know you’re never going to wear gain and take them down to the charity shop. Some charity shops, even have a pick-up service where they will happily come to your door to collect your unwanted items.
  1. Sell your clothes on the internet. Online sites such as eBay, sell next to everything, and you get some money back – especially on those items that still have their original label on them (we all have those items lying around somewhere, that seemed like a good idea at the time!). In many cases, bundles of clothing sell better than an individual item. Don’t forget to group them in size, style, brand, etc.… and check out what people are buying.
  1. Making the old into new. If your clothes are looking like last century or tired, get out the sewing machine and make a few adjustments to them. You can simply transform and tweak your clothes.
  • Try replacing the buttons on an old cardigan, jacket or coat. Pick up some new fun buttons at the fabric store and update the look. Make a more individual style.
  • Change those retro flared jeans into skinny ones. Turn the jeans inside out and pin the edges of your jeans together, about up to the knee, but still make sure to leave some room to bend your knees. Then sew along where you placed the pins. Turn the jeans right side out and try them on. And there you have a new cool looking pair of jeans!

There are so many other things that can be done with old unwanted clothing, but at least the above will be a start!

7 things you can’t afford to run out of at home

One of the things that you might have heard from elders who had it rough for whatever reason, was how to stock up on items that will last some time and purchase while they are at their cheapest sale price. They were mostly canned and boxed goods that would be on sale at the time, but they also included staples such as flour, rice, salt, pepper, aluminium foil, plastic wrap, etc. These are things that you would kick yourself for not having on hand at any given moment simply because you forgot to purchase them. Here are 7 things you can’t afford to run out of at home

1 – Water

Well, coming in first it has to be the winner. It has to be said that without any water, you’re not going to be lasting very long at all. That single one thing which most of us take for granted and we get to use every single day of our lives is that liquid which comes out of our taps and in bottles. It’s in all kinds of different foods also. We can last for an average of around 3 days. Not forgetting that we need water to cook with, cleanse ourselves and do things like having to wash clothing and cooking utensils.

2 – Cleaning Supplies

If cleaning supplies aren’t on the list of necessities, you must be living on the streets or in a cave. Still, saying that, even the average person probably doesn’t think about purchasing these household supplies until they run out. Can you imagine the smell of you and your clothing, and those people around you after say about 3 -4 days of not washing or cleaning? No wonder so many diseases and viruses were prevalent not that long ago. It was good old fashioned sanitation that helped to sort those out a while back, thank goodness. So yes, soap, shampoo and detergent.

(Plus – Let’s not forget to add dish washing liquid. You just don’t want to run out of it. If you do, it will mean a backlog of dishes, and nobody wants that. A sink full of dirty dishes can be a sad sight and also self-defeating, so make sure you always have extra on hand.)

3 – Food

Well, yes, of course, but what kind of foods first? A good source of protein: These will include things such as chicken, fish, ham, beef nuts and beans. Although some of these are mainly consumed in our main meals, there is nothing wrong with snacking on a chicken breast or a slice of ham if you happen to be hungry. You will also feel somewhat fuller than if you ate a pack of junk food crisps or such.

4 – Papers

There is never really a good time to run out of toilet paper. It’s all that practically separates us from the animals! Paper towels, conversely, may seem to be a less urgent purchase, but a minor kitchen spill can quickly turn into a disaster if you’re don’t have any kitchen paper lying around. One of the best defences against a dearth of paper goods is old fashioned multi pack-buying.  Buying your paper towels in bulk is even better and you will certainly save in the long run and be ready for anything.

5 – Non-Perishable Foods

If you happen to be running low on funds, it will certainly help to have a pantry stocked with sundry canned and boxed provisions. Non-perishable foods such as breakfast cereals, tea, coffee, ramen noodles, canned foods, and such are all things that can be bought in bulk at wholesale stores or even on the internet at certain online sites.

6 – Toothpaste

This is another you really would like to not run out of. If you’ve been camping or travelling and missed just one day of giving those teeth of yours a clean, you know what it feels like. Yuk! However, if you had to, you can use baking soda for a day or two. (There are some people who use baking soda in place of toothpaste on a daily basis).

7 – Coffee

For so many people, this would be the end of the world! So many good people around the planet love coffee as their first drink of the day and heaven forbid if they ran out! Some folk even drink a few more cups throughout their day.

Ready Aye Ready!

Best to be prepared and one way to make sure you don’t run out of these things is to always buy another as soon as you open your last. Just add to your shopping list or make a simple note on your mobile phone.

4 personal financial tips you ought to know by now

4 personal financial tips you ought to know by now

One of the best tips for personal financial planning is found right in the term: planning. It is these kind of people who are the most successful at personal finance, because they take time to plan for the distant future, as well as budgeting the amount of money they are making and spending along the way. Making a personal budget and then sticking to it is one of the easiest and best methods of personal finance planning. Here are 4 tips you ought to know by now:

1 – To begin the process of creating a budget for personal financial planning, it is a great idea to keep all receipts for a couple of months, make notes of all utilities or other bills that get paid, and write down all cash transactions. The idea behind this is to see just where one’s hard earned cash goes to each month. Then, compile all the receipts and divide them into categories, such as utilities, household expenses, and other expenses, to name a few. The chances are, that there will be some areas where spending can be cut so as to save some money, and even if there are no obvious places to cut spending, at least a transparent picture of income and expenditures will now be available so that priorities can be established.

2 – When you create a budget, determining acceptable amounts for expenditures in all categories is also a good idea. Then simply see if it is at all possible to stick to those categories. Personal financial planning also involves setting goals for the future, and these goals may be immediate, such as paying off power bills, credit card debt or saving up a down payment for a brand new car. They might also be longer term, such as saving for a down payment on a home, or putting money aside in a retirement account or for an emergency fund.

3 – A lot of people choose to create individual categories in the budget for these short term and long term financial goals. Then there are others who simply siphon money out of a checking account and into savings accounts each month, which can be advantageous because the money can then gain interest. Personal financial planning often includes investments as well, which may be an additional retirement account, investment in shares, stocks or bonds, or life insurance policies, to name just a few, as well as real estate investments.

4 – Get to know how to use computer software. Some people are unable to do personal financial planning independently, such as creating a spreadsheet on a computer, or even simply using a laptop or tablet. To simplify the entire process of financial planning, it really is in your very best interests to get to know how to use a computer and computer software. After learning such, and how easy it all is, you will wonder why you never learned it a long time ago! And please, don’t forget to back everything up at least two or three times, just in case of any glitches.

Simple as that.

Living in a small apartment is something that you have to overcome, and you can make sure that it is an entirely pleasant experience. This is something that you can achieve relatively easily, but you might need a little bit of help along the way to achieve.

You will feel that your apartment is one of the best places that you have ever lived in, once you can deal with the fact that it is a small space. You can learn how to make the most of a small space

Paint The Walls Vibrant Colours

The first thing that you need to do when you move into an apartment in Perth is to make sure that the rooms are bright and vibrant. You need to ensure that the rooms are spacious and that they have been painted bright colours so that the apartment feels much more welcoming.

You can choose vibrant blues and yellows to ensure that the apartment looks as big and as comfortable as possible. Painting the apartment with light colours will ensure that the rooms look bigger than they actually are. This is an optical trick that will make guests think that you have a huge apartment when in fact it is not that big at all.

You can experiment with new colours every once in a while until you are completely happy with paint that makes the small apartment look like it is as big as possible.

Make Sure That The Windows Are As Big As Possible

You need to make sure that there is enough light in the apartment to make sure that it is well lit. This can come from artificial lighting, but you also need to make sure that there is enough natural light coming into the rooms in your house. This means that you should think about the size of the windows that you are going to have in your apartment. You should shop around until you find the size which suits the dimensions of your apartment.

Make Sure That You Buy Statement Furniture

When you are outfitting a new apartment, you need to make sure that the furniture is the right dimension for the size of the rooms. You might think that it is a good idea to install lots of small items of furniture in the apartment. However, this can be counterintuitive, because you might find that small pieces of furniture clutter up your apartment and you find it difficult to move around.

This means that you should really think about buying larger furniture. This kind of statement furniture will draw your eye to the centre of the room and it will make you feel like you have a lot of space to move around.

You should experiment with different pieces of statement furniture to make sure that you buy pieces which fit with the style of the rest of the apartment.

Get Rid Of A Lot Of Clutter

When you are living in a small apartment, the last thing that you want to deal with is a lot of clutter. This means that you will constantly have to move around unwanted pieces of furniture and appliances. You might also find that you cannot find certain things because of the amount of clutter that you have inside your apartment. This might make the apartment a very unpleasant place to live.

Instead, you should clear out the clutter from your small apartment and make sure that all the hallways and rooms are as clear as possible. Then you can invite lots of friends around to your apartment and they will want to stay for a long time.

Every few months you should have a clear out to make sure that you are keeping the apartment as neat and as clean as possible. Then you will not need to worry about the doorways getting blocked or the hallways becoming filled with lots of unnecessary rubbish.

You might want to try and make sure that the clutter can be turned into profit. You

You can make sure that the clutter and rubbish are taken to the local charity shop so that it can be sold on to make money for people who are less fortunate than you.

Try A Smaller Bed

When you are living in a small apartment, the bedroom becomes extremely important because it is one of the main rooms. You should make the rooms inside your apartment as efficient as possible, so you should get rid of your large king-size bed and trade it for something which is much smaller. Then you can sleep in comfort and you will still have a lot of room inside your small apartment.

You will be surprised by the amount of space that you can save by making sure that the bed is as compact as possible. This is something that a lot of homeowners will not even consider and they are missing out on creating a large amount of extra space.

When you are trying to maximise the amount of space in your small apartment, you need to be completely proactive. This will mean that you can transform a small and dingy apartment into something spacious and vibrant in no time at all.

Time Saving Lifehacks For The Busy You

Time Saving Lifehacks For The Busy You

When you are leading a busy life, you need to make sure that you are trying to save as much time as possible. This will make you feel happier in the long-term and you feel that your life is also much more efficient.

You will also be benefitting people around you when you perform these life hacks, whether they are your friends or they are your family. You will be able to spend more time with people rather than spending a lot of time on tasks that used to take you a long time. When you become more efficient with your time, you will also feel much less stressed and worried when it comes to dealing with adversity.

Here are some simple life hacks which are simple to implement in your daily life.

Cook All Of Your Weekly Meals On A Sunday And Then Freeze Them

When you are leading a busy life with work and with your friends, the last thing that you want to do is to spend all of your free time cooking. You will not want to rely on ready meals because these are unhealthy and they will not fill you up in the same way that your own cooking can.

There are several ways to make sure that cooking your food does not take up a lot of your time. Firstly, you should think about ordering your shopping online so that you do not have to spend the entirety of Sunday morning going around the supermarket looking for food. Instead, you can effortlessly order all of your food in the comfort of your own home.

The supermarket will deliver the food right to your door at a time which is extremely convenient for you.

When it comes to cooking the meals, you can save a lot of time with a very simple method.  You should cook a week’s worth of meals on a Sunday. Then you can eat your meals for the day and freeze the rest of them for the week. Then when you come home from a busy day at work, you will not need to do any food preparation at all. Reheating the food that you have already prepared needs to be done thoroughly because if you don’t heat the food properly, you might get food poisoning.

This is one of the most effective time-savers that you can perform in your life, so make sure that you dedicate part of the weekend to getting all of the food prepared. You can even get your partner or your children to help you and it will be a good family bonding experience that you can repeat every week.

Set Up Filters On Your Email Address

When you are trying to deal with lots of emails, the last thing you need is to have to read a lot of spam messages. Spam emails are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so they don’t always go into the spam folder of your email address. This can be frustrating when you have a lot of important work or personal emails to deal with, and it can make the right emails difficult to locate. You can set up specific filters which will make sure that the emails get diverted into the spam folder. You can look at common words that appear in the subject line of the email and then set the filter to block emails which contain those words.

This will make your working day much more efficient as well as in the evening when you are checking your personal emails.

Buy A Pressure Washer For The Car

Cleaning the car once a week can be a long process, especially if there are a couple of them to be washed. Washing by hand will not be very time-efficient and you might also miss some of the crucial spots such as inside the rims of the wheels.

Instead of washing the car completely by hand, you need to think of some tools which will help you to get the job done as quickly as possible. You should buy yourself a high-powered pressure washer for the car so that you can blast the dirt and the grime off in no time at all, instead of spending half-an-hour scrubbing with soapy water.

You can change the level on the pressure washer so that you can blast the dirt off the car with maximum efficiency. Many pressure washers have a compartment for soap that you will be able to clean the car much more efficiently. Research your options before you buy the pressure washer which is the most suitable one for the job.

Get A Sprinkler System For The Garden

You want your garden to look as lush as possible all of the time. This is something that can be quite time-consuming if you are using a hose or a watering can to make sure that the flowers and plants have enough water to help them grow.

You can save a lot of time and effort if you buy a rainwater tank that can be hooked up to a sprinkler system. These sprinklers can be raised or lowered so that the entire garden can be watered in a short space of time. All you will have to do is flick a switch to turn the system on. Then you can get on with other things without having to worry about making sure that the garden has been completely watered.

Arrange A Drop-Off System With Other Parents

Taking the kids to school every morning can be a time-consuming process when you would rather be making an early start on the work that you have to do. This means that you should arrange a carpool drop-off system with some of the other parents who live near to your house. You can take it in turns to collect all the children from their homes before school and taking them there.

You should try and save time in every area of your life with clever life hacks.
